BACKYARD CHICKENS

Dave Ingham Allen & Unwin

Dave has been scratching around chicken runs since his University share-house days when he knocked together a chicken coop out of recycled fencing and a wooden machinery packing case. Nowadays he runs Rent-A-Chook offering a try before you buy pet chicken business. According to Dave, keeping chickens is “greener than Kermit’s bum” and he’s eggceptionally passionate about poultry. Being omnivorous, chickens eat all sorts of food waste that would otherwise end up in landfill. For a 2-5 person household, this can be anything from 5 to 15kg of food waste per week. Dave has the pecking order in the secret life of chickens well and truly sorted when it comes to keeping happy hens at home. From ethical farming to what makes the perfect egg, this book is as diverse as the chickens that feature inside it. No yolk.
