In the spirit of going back to revisit what we missed, here is another thrown up by the end of year best-of lists. Noted as the only Country act on Shazam’s “Emerging Artists of 2017,” Young has captured the hearts of fans everywhere through his honest lyrics and West Coast-meets-Southern sound, aptly dubbed “Caliville” style. “Destined for mass appeal” (Rolling Stone Country), he won’t be country traditionalists’ first choice, as patent R&B and soul soaked influences ooze from every track but the delivery is laced with sincerity and warmth with familiar country instrumentation. Brett’s affecting, raspy voice is his point of difference and he co-wrote 11 of the 12 tracks including his current single ‘Like I Loved You’ and the No. 1 smash ‘Sleep Without You.’ The follow-up single, ‘In Case You Didn’t Know,’ solidified Young as the first Country artist to hit the platinum benchmark in 2017.
