CRUISIN’ DEUCES INTRODUCING, THE REV. DR. Z’S CRUISIN’ DEUCES

Spearheaded by talented siblings Zane (lead guitar/vocals) and Jy-Perry Banks (pedal steel/acoustic guitar), Sydney’s Cruisin’ Deuces are a class act: an erudite vintage country collective, super-saturated with all the rodeo-suited, crystal-studded string-tie showmanship of Bakersfield’s mid-60s golden age. The band’s debut mini-album delivers on every live promise, showcasing so much unrivalled musicality and uniquely captivating songwriting poise. Frenetic Telecaster lead and licks jostle with chiming honkytonk piano and sensuous horn on up-tempo dancehall blitz ‘No Getting Away’, upright bass maestro Capt. Reckless anchors the high-stepping rockabilly groove of ‘Hepcat Daddy’, while the infectious chorus hook of West Coast floor-filler ‘Falling Deeper’ is a rousing highlight. There’s some archetypal hangdog heartsickness in fiddle-lacquered weeper ‘Where My Heart Used to Be’, slinking, swaggering honkytonk in ‘Splitsville’, and a satiny Tex-Mex sway in ‘Put the Flame Out’. Sydney, it seems, isn’t so far from the streets Bakersfield, Memphis or Fort Worth, after all.  Gareth Hipwell
